YQX unveils new domestic departures lounge |
The Gander International Airport Authority (GIAA) officially opened its new departures lounge to the community and traveling public July 5.
"We have outgrown our old departures lounge, and it required a significant enlargement and facelift," stated GIAA President and CEO Gary Vey. "We invested in a new lounge to be responsive to the needs of our carriers and passengers and to conform to new safety and security regulations."
The renovated departures lounge has doubled its floor space and can accommodate up to 250 passengers, with completely new, modern, accessible washroom facilities and a mini-concessions stand. The domestic departures lounge affords a view of the historic International Lounge through a glass partition in an open-space concept. The new facility represents an investment of approximately $500,000.
Gander International Airport has posted a 21.8% growth in passenger movements over the same fiscal period last year, the highest percentile growth of any airport in Atlantic Canada. The airport has expanded its passenger capacity and flight frequency, and is looking to grow passenger traffic by 25% in the next year.
"We want to thank travelers for their patience and understanding while we've undertaken these renovations," Mr. Vey. "I also want to recognize the work of our employees, who have done an outstanding job with this project."
The Gander International Airport Authority is the not-for-profit organization created in 1996 to manage operations at Gander International Airport (CYQX). The airport plays a key role in the economic and community development of the Town of Gander and the Central Newfoundland region.
