AIRLINE LAUNCHES DIRECT FLIGHTS FROM GANDER |
~ Affordable flights to secondary markets fills void in Canada's airline industry ~
(GANDER, NFLD - MARCH 17, 2006) - The Gander Airport Authority today received a much needed boost with the announcement that Sunwing Airlines will begin offering non-stop flights between Gander and Toronto.
We are delighted that Sunwing will offer affordable travel options for travelers for the peak summer season," said Gary Vey, President and CEO of the Gander International Airport Authority. "Sunwing has carved a reputation for an exceptional standard of service and we are pleased to play a role in their continued growth. This Toronto service is exciting news for the people of Central Newfoundland and our tourism industry."
Sunwing's Gander flights will run from June 23 to September 15 offering two flights per week on Tuesdays and Fridays. One way prices are $150.
"We created this program to fill a void in the industry," said Stephen Hunter, COO of Sunwing Vacations. "The Federal government has indicated they want airlines that provide affordable, convenient transportation, servicing secondary urban markets between Atlantic Canada and Ontario, options that don't currently exist for travellers."
The Gander flights are part of the company's new coast-to-coast domestic program with a focus on secondary urban markets in Ontario, B.C. and Atlantic Canada. Sunwing Airlines was launched in November 2005 to carry passengers to southern destinations for the company's travel arm, Sunwing Vacations.
The announcement of Sunwing's Canada program coincides with their acquisition of a third aircraft, a new Boeing Next-Generation 737-800 currently being manufactured by The Boeing Company. The plane is scheduled to be delivered in June 2006 and is the first in Sunwing's fleet to be equipped with winglets, a feature that reduces fuel burn resulting in increased savings.
Sunwing Airlines provides affordable, direct-to-destination flights from Toronto, London, Vancouver, St. John's, Halifax, Gander, Stephenville, Charlottetown and Sydney. The airline also provides flights for Sunwing Vacations' all-inclusive holiday packages to Cuba, Mexico, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Panama and Jamaica. For the last two years in a row, Sunwing has been listed by Profit Magazine as one of the Fastest Growing Companies in Canada.
