BIRD OF FLIGHT
Kenneth Lockhead began work on the 72-foot mural in our international transit lounge in the spring of 1959 and was ready for the official opening by Queen Elizabeth II in June of that year. The mural was painted onsite. Those who worked at the airport at the time remember how Mr. Lockhead mixed a batch of eggs each morning before he began his work, as the paint was egg-tempered.

The theme of the mural involves the flora and fauna of Canada, or alternatively, the general symbolical theme of the air. Industrial scenes and actual airplanes were not to be included in the mural as these would be invariability become dated by technology.

Mr. Lockhead combined the theme of the air with representational forms related to Canadian birds, trees and flowers. His treatment of this idea is a most personal one with a marked emphasis on humanity.
