Gander receives three honors at 2013 ACI-NA Excellence in Airport Marketing and Communications Awards
(June 7, 2013) – The Gander International Airport Authority (GIAA) was recognized with three honors at the Airports Council International-North America (ACI-NA) Marketing and Communications Awards held in Atlanta Wednesday, June 5.
- The GIAA won 1st Place in the category of Creative Innovation in Promotional Items for its Pilot’s Handbook, a pocket-sized collection of aviation humor and wisdom
- In the Newsletters category, the GIAA placed 2nd for its Fly Gander newsletter
- The GIAA placed 3rd in Radio Advertising for its “Caribbean Is Calling” campaign, which ran in support of Sunwing Airline’s service from Gander to Cuba and the Dominican Republic
This year, 53 airports submitted 245 entries in categories ranging from printed materials to broadcast advertising and social media campaigns, to public relations and community outreach initiatives. Each of the 20 categories was judged by communications and marketing professionals from the U.S. and Canada.
“We are proud to be recognized for our marketing efforts,” said GIAA President and CEO Gary Vey. “Everything we do at Gander is designed and executed in house and our entries were up against major airports that have substantial marketing budgets and resources. Marketing is about growing your business first and foremost, but it is nice to have our work acknowledged.”

“ACI-NA congratulates the winners of the 2013 Excellence in Airport Marketing and Communications Contest, and we truly appreciate the quality of entries that we received across all categories this year,” said ACI-NA President Greg Principato. “Once again, the contest has proved to be an exceptionally competitive opportunity for airports across North America to present their latest and greatest ideas for marketing and communicating to many audiences. The creativity and imagination exhibited by this year’s entries clearly demonstrate that airports continue to innovate how they share the message of their economic importance to the communities they serve.”
The Gander International Airport Authority is the not-for-profit organization created in 1996 to manage operations at Gander International Airport (CYQX). The airport plays a key role in the economic and community development of the Central Newfoundland region. In 2013, the airport celebrates its 75th year of operations.
