AIRPORT ENCOURAGES EARLY BIRDS

Arrive early for departures during summer peak

The Gander International Airport Authority (GIAA) is reminding travelers to arrive early for departures as the airport moves into the peak summer season.

Airlines typically require passengers to arrive at the airport 90 minutes prior to a domestic flight. For those who have checked in, baggage drop off typically ends 45 minutes prior to departure. Travelers should check directly with their airline to confirm exact check-in times and plan to go through security as soon as they’ve checked in.

“Like most airports, July and August are the busiest months for passenger travel at Gander,” said GIAA President and CEO Reg Wright. “We strongly encourage passengers to err on the side of caution by getting to the airport and through security early.”

Almost half of daily flights from Gander depart between 545 and 725 am, carrying 70% of the total enplaning passengers for the day. Through June, the airport passenger traffic at Gander has increased 11%.

“Few people enjoy an early rise or waiting at airports, but it’s much better than enduring the disruption and inconvenience of missing your flight,” Wright said. “We continue to work closely with our airline partners and CATSA, which is responsible for security screening at Canadian airports, to ensure the check-in and security process is as efficient as possible.”
