The Gander International Airport Authority is a not for profit organization created in 1996 to manage operations at the Gander International Airport (CYQX). The Gander International Airport Authority plays a key role in the economic and community development of the Town of Gander and the Central Newfoundland Region.
The Gander International Airport Authority’s mission statement is to “operate a viable, safe, and secure international airport.”
Board of Directors
The GIAA board consists of 13 directors, 10 appointed by nominating entities and three appointed by the board itself.
Directors are nominated by the following entities: Gander and Area Chamber of Commerce, Lewisporte and Area Chamber of Commerce, and Exploits Regional Chamber of Commerce, Federal Government, Provincial Government, and Town of Gander.
A director may serve no more than a total of nine years. Collectively, directors are to possess knowledge relating to the aviation industry, air transportation, business, finance, administration, law, government, engineering, labour organizations, and the interest of consumers.
Code of Conduct for Directors
All directors of the Authority are required to comply with a Code of Conduct and Rules Concerning Conflict of Interest. These require that directors avoid and refrain from involvement in conflict of interest situations.
Every director of the Authority is required to file a disclosure statement upon becoming a director. Thereafter, each director must file an annual disclosure statement, which is reviewed by the entire board and by the Authority’s external auditors.
There are four committees of the Board of Directors. Committees are only empowered to make recommendations to the board unless directed otherwise by the board. Whenever possible, all decisions involve the entire board.
Committees include: Executive Committee, Finance and Audit Committee, Environmental Committee, and Governance Committee.
